The Bible documents three distinct lists of gifts, each emphasizing the gifts themselves, the giver, and their purpose. Here, we delve into an exploration of each giver and why the test focuses on the gifts of God's grace, gifts from the Father.
Gifts from the Son
  • Apostles - Sent to help carry out the Father’s mission.
  • Prophets - To communicate correction and perspective from God.
  • Evangelist - The one who realigns the need to reach the lost.
  • Teachers - Have authority over what they teach.
  • Pastors - Leaders and caretakers.

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; Ephesians ‭4:7‬-13

Jesus is the giver – "He Himself gave". The gifts are apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher. The purpose is to equip the saints to do ministry work and to edify (build up) the body of Christ". This list has two unique statements that set it apart from the other lists. First, are the two words – "to be". Jesus gives gifts to some and He sets them apart TO BE something, not DO something. This is one reason this list of gifts is often referred to as the 5-fold ministry gifts. Here a person is gifted TO BE a prophet which differs from a person who prophecies. A person who is gifted TO BE a teacher is different than a person who teaches. A person who is gifted TO BE an evangelist is different than every believer sharing their faith with people they meet.

Second, is the word, "SOME". "And He Himself gave SOME to be." You will notice in the other two gifts lists they are given "to all" or to each one. Here the gifts are given to SOME. This is why we do not include this list of gifts in the test. Not everyone has one of these gifts.

  • Apostles - The role of an apostle is crucial when establishing the church of Jesus Christ among the unevangelized. Apostles are sent by the church to initiate new churches or serve as missionaries. They inspire the church community to extend its reach beyond its boundaries to fulfill the Great Commission (1 Cor. 12:28; Eph. 4:11).
  • Prophets - Act as inspired messengers whose message encourages and guide the community through understanding God's perspective on current situations and their potential consequences, with the ultimate authority and proof resting in scripture (1 Corinthians 14:3; Acts 13:1).
  • Evangelist - The one who realigns the need to reach the lost. God gifts his church with evangelists to lead others to Christ effectively and enthusiastically. This gift builds up the body by adding new members to its fellowship (Eph. 4:11).
  • Teachers - Teaching involves having authority over the content being taught, providing clear instructions to help others learn, and guiding individuals in understanding the truths and doctrines of God's Word to strengthen, unify, and mature the community. (1 Cor. 12:28; Rom. 12:7; Eph. 4:11).
  • Pastors - Leaders and caretakers. The gift of shepherding is seen in those who oversee the spiritual well-being of others. While pastors, akin to shepherds, do tend to the church members, this gift is not exclusive to just pastors or staff members (Eph. 4:11).

Gifts from the Spirit

There are a variety of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. Corinthians‬ ‭12:6‭-‬11‬

The Holy Spirit is the giver. The gifts are; word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues. The purpose is for the profit of all. These gifts are ways that the Holy Spirit manifests, reveals, or makes Himself know. All nine gifts are available for us if we make ourselves available for the Holy Spirits use. They belong to Him and he distributes to each one as He wills.

We should clarify, wisdom is not the same as the Spirit giving a word of wisdom. Knowledge is not the same as the word of knowledge. Discernment is not the discerning of spirits. Just because a person is wise, knowledgeable or perceptive does not mean the Holy Spirit is manifesting Himself through one of these gifts.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not included in this test because all of these gifts belong to the Holy Spirit and are available to all believers as the Spirit wills. We don't own any of them, the Holy Spirit uses us to manifest Himself.

  • Revelation Gifts
    • Word of Wisdom - Wisdom is the gift that discerns the work of the Holy Spirit in the body and applies His teachings and actions to the needs of the body (1 Cor. 12:28).
    • Word of knowledge - The gift of knowledge manifests itself in teaching and training in discipleship. It is the God-given ability to learn, know, and explain the precious truths of God’s Word. A word of knowledge is a Spirit-revealed truth (1 Cor. 12:28).
    • Discernment - Knowing the spiritual situation. Discernment aids the body by recognizing the true intentions of those within or related to the body. Discernment tests the message and actions of others for the protection and well-being of the body (1 Cor. 12:10).
  • Power Gifts
    • Faith - To operate beyond what you could not do. Faith trusts God to work beyond the human capabilities of the people. Believers with this gift encourage others to trust in God in the face of apparently insurmountable odds (1 Cor. 12:9).
    • Gifts of healings A capability used by God to restore others, be that physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.
    • Physical miracles. God uses human intermediaries through whom he performs powerful acts that are perceived by others to have altered the ordinary course of nature.
  • Vocal Gifts
    • Prophecy - Speaking under inspiration from God and to make known in any way the truth of God which is designed to influence people.
    • Diverse tongues - When an individual speaks a language that he or she does not know. These tongues can include human languages with which the speaker is unfamiliar (Acts 2:8-11) or non-human, holy languages with which no person is familiar (1 Corinthians 14:2).
    • Interpreting Tongues - The supernatural ability to interpret and make known to the public another language that has not been learned. This interpretation is done for the mutual edification of the church.
Gifts from the Father
Every one of these gifts is given out of Grace.
  • Prophecy - Desires to connect all circumstances to God.
  • Ministry (Some translations say - Helps) - To respond to the needs of individuals.
  • Teaches -  Instruct and to help learn in a clear way.
  • Exhorts - To uplift or impact the atmosphere and people within it.
  • Give -  To make and share wealth.
  • Leads (Some translations say - Administration) - See opportunity in and through people.
  • Mercy -  Feel and show compassion.

For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:3–8

God is the giver – "God has dealt". The gifts are: prophecy, ministry (some translations use the word service), teaching, exhortation, giving, leading (Some translations use the word administrations), showing mercy. The purpose is implied by the analogy of a physical body with different members who have different functions all working together to supply what the other needs.

Here are a few things to notice in these verses. First, all the gifts are action oriented, Not only are they action oriented, but we are instructed to use the gift for its intended purpose – if teaching, then teach, if giving then give liberally, if prophecy, then prophesy in proportion to our faith, etc.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen" 1 Peter 4:10-11

The gift we have is not for us, it is to be given away or used to minister to others. When we do this, God is glorified.

Second, EACH ONE has been given a gift. Nobody is left out. This is why we use this list of gifts for the test. We know that everyone has been graced by God with a gift that wants to make the body stronger.

Third, the gift has been given according to the GRACE that is given to us. Even Paul, the writer of 1 Corinthians says in vs 3, "For I say, through the grace given to me…." The grace given to Paul prompted him to communicate – "For I say..". Another example is Ephesians 3:7, "…of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power."
1 Corinthians 12:1-7
Before we take the test, let's look at one more passage where we will see all three groups of gifts referenced. We started with 1 Corinthians 12:1 where we are admonished not to be ignorant of the spiritual gifts. For context we will start with vs 1 again. Notice the words used – they are very specific.

(1) Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant; (2) you know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. (3) Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. (4) There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. (5) There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. (6) And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. (7) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given…. 1 Corinthians 12:1–7

Notice verses 4, 5, and 6.
  • Verse 4: "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit." This refers to the gifts or manifestation of the Spirit listed in the continuing verses. They are available to all, for the profit of all, as the Spirit wills.
  • Verse 5: "There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord." This refers to the gifts of Jesus in Ephesians 4:11. They are given to some, for the equipping of saints and edification of the Church. Notice the verse uses the words, "different ministries" and "but the same Lord." Ephesians talks about ministry callings ("He Himself gave some to be ..."). These different ministries are given by the same Lord (not Spirit, not God).
  • Verse 6: "And there are diversities of activities, but the same God who works all in all." This refers to the gifts of God's grace in Romans 12. Notice the words "diversities of activities." We just learned that the gifts in Romans 12 are action gifts. They differ from each other and don't have the same function. These gifts have been given to us by God's grace.

You have been graced with amazing gifts. God wants to use your gifts to serve others. Take the following test and identify what your gifts are. Then discover ways to give them away to minister to the people around you.

Results Explained

  • Prophecy - It is easy for you to hear, see, or sense what God is saying. You feel an urge to spend time with God and know Him more and hear what He is saying. In use, this gift helps us see things from God's point of view, both now and what might happen next. Their main job is to guide and encourage people by sharing God's message in a way that fits their present situation. Predicting future outcomes might happen, but it's more about understanding the present and applying God's word to it.  This is different from the office of a Prophet. Acts 2:37-40, 7:51-53, 26:24-29; 1 Corinthians 14:1-4; 1 Thessalonians 1:5 (Prayer, Groups Leader)

  • Ministry or Service/Helps - When you hear the call to action, you find yourself saying, 'Yes, I can help'. You are energized by knowing you were able to serve others through practical tasks. It doesn't matter if it is big or small, you feel alive when you know you helped. Acts 6:1-7; Romans 12:7; Galatians 6:10; 1 Timothy 1:16-18; Titus 3:14 (Guest Experience, BSA Kids Elementary, Nursery/Preschool, Outreach, Production, Facility, Safety Team, Outreach)

  • Teacher - You serve others from the wealth of knowledge you have by offering advice in one-on-one, small groups, or in class settings. • Giver - You embody the words of Christ, "It is more blessed to give than to receive". You know what it means to give a cup of water in the name of Jesus and you realize that it's not the gift itself that honors God, but the heart with which it's given. Others are drawn to your kind heart and due to your experience with giving you've learned not to enable poor behavior, but instead to hear from God and obey when He speaks to give. You may have been blessed with a special ability to earn money and fund the kingdom in ways that other people can't fathom. You know God owns everything and that you are simply a conduit of His resources. You may be tempted to think highly of yourself because of the amount you're willing to sacrifice and give to advance the kingdom and other good causes, but whenever pride creeps in, you remember God's generosity to you personally, and you recognize He is the provider. You are the conduit. Mark 12:41-44; Romans 12:8; 2 Corinthians 8:1-7, 9:2-7 (Kingdom Builders, Groups)

  • Leader - When in Leadership, Administration, People naturally look to you for direction and leadership. Whether leading teams or projects you are energized by getting results and accomplishing beneficial outcomes. Organizing people and tasks is easy. It doesn't matter if you lead a few people or a lot of people – they just seem to follow. Romans 12:8; 1 Timothy 3:1-13, 5:17; Hebrews 13:17 (Groups, All Teams)

  • Mercy - Mercy is best described as compassion in action. You see a need and your heart is enlarged; you are compelled to show you care. You find yourself drawn to those in need and they find themselves drawn to you – because you see them, hear them, and feel them without judgment. You are deeply moved to act on behalf of those in pain. Matthew 9:35-36; Mark 9:41; Romans 12:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:14 (First Aid Team,  Outreach Team, Groups)
